Product Description

The world is full of need. In sub-Saharan Africa alone, 50% of the population live on under $1 a day– that’s over 315 MILLION people living in desperate poverty. With America being among the top 3 economic powers in the world, we have great opportunity to address the overwhelming issue of global poverty. But how? What can we do that will have a sustainable impact on generations to come? The answer is in “One”. Certainly we, as individuals, can not bring a solution to the problem as a whole, but together we can bring a solution to one person– one family. The Dougherty /Clark family here in Hudson, NH–has been researching a way to help “One” for the past few years. Her name is Lerato.

Lerato is a young woman from Lesotho- a small, poverty stricken country landlocked by South Africa. Lerato struggles every day to care for herself and her 3 year old son, Mohau. For years she has battled against illness, family abandonment, cultural stigmas, and a steadily unraveling economy. This has resulted in a loss of her home, her belongings, and even her ability to provide basic necessities such as food and healthcare for herself and her son. However, despite her situation, Lerato is positive, and hopeful and believing every day for a better future for herself and her son. I believe that we can be a part of bringing a positive future to Lerato and Mohau and I want to invite you to partner with us in changing the life of this “One.”

Lerato will start her own small business called Love’s Kitchen. (Lerato is a Sotho name meaning “love.”) Love’s Kitchen will be a mobile-food-service business in which Lerato will make and sell lunches to office and business workers. I have volunteered to help develop recipes for Love’s Kitchen and we are confident that the combination of great food, positive marketing and Lerato’s drive to succeed will become the future that Lerato has been hoping for.

We at For Kids Who Cook have committed to raising $500 for this project- the cost of a full sized refrigerator. We are looking for 100 people to give $5 each toward our goal.

Your $5 may not solve world poverty, but it will help to solve poverty in one woman's world. Do something.
